A Story of Three Courtyards

Project Type

Residential

Date

2022

Collaboration

Aagaur

Location

Bhopal

Area

4500 square feet

This private residence is an attempt in blending tradition and sustainability, while catering to a modern family's requirements.

Starting with the roof, we have a unique composition of brick domes of varied heights. Larger volumes have higher domes with an oculus to let the hot air escape. Some rooms also have flat stone slabs that not only provide a sense of solidity and stability.

The walls of the building are made from a combination of baked bricks and stabilised adobe (unbaked) bricks. And to add to the comfort of the residents, we used a traditional lime plastering technique that helps regulate the temperature inside.

The timber doors and windows are repurposed from old houses that were broken down. This adds character and charm to the building, while also reducing waste.

The flooring of the rooms is made of handcrafted traditional Galicha tiles, a local technique from Madhya Pradesh that uses coloured oxides, similar to Atangudi tiles. The verandah of the residence features reused broken ceramic tiles, which are typically discarded as waste.

Each of the the courtyards offers a distinct feel and atmosphere, creating a sense of separation and privacy within the residence. These courtyards provide space for outdoor living, relaxation, and recreation, making them an important part of the building's design.
